Jewelry: Helping to Empower Women

On March 8, 2012, in Holidays & Celebrations, by Jen Hankin

An old photo of women protesting for their rights during an International Women's Day celebration

March 8th is International Women’s Day celebrated to honor women’s economic, political and social achievements over the years. The first annual National Women’s Day was celebrated in 1909, which was declared by the Socialist Party of America.

It’s important for us, all of us, to recognize this day to see how far we, as a society, have come.

This year’s theme is Women’s Empowerment, focusing on ending world hunger and poverty. The Triangle is celebration this day on March 17th at the RBC Center’s Women’s Empowerment 2012, featuring keynote speaker Tyra Banks.

Trya, modeling vintage tassel earrings on the right, is a great advocate for women’s empowerment. The model, actress, media personality and author has been acknowledged as one of the most successful models of her generation. She truly stands up for real women!

“Women should understand there is no such thing as standard beauty.” -Tyra Banks

Not only do political, economic and social achievements empower women, so does jewelry! At Joint Venture Jewelry, most of our customers are women. Women now don’t have to rely on men to wear beautiful jewels, they can buy jewelry for themselves!

There is no better example of this than Gabrielle Bonheur “Coco” Chanel. As possibly the most iconic of all female designers, Coco Chanel was largely responsible for ridding women of the corset and restrictive clothing. In the early 1920s, Coco Chanel sparked a new casual elegance for women’s fashion, the “boyish” trend.

Chanel also is known for her inspirational quotes and timeless jewels. Chanel was a guarded person and fought for her own destiny, carving a world for herself that was at odds with her humble beginnings– like many women in power today.

Albright's book, Read My Pins is on display at Joint Venture Jewelry.

On the political side, Madeleine Albright is the first woman to become a United States Secretary of State in 1996.  Besides all the great work Albright accomplished in the political spectrum, she also empowered women and brought pins and brooches back into fashion.

“Before long, and without intending it, I found that jewelry had become part of my personal diplomatic arsenal. Former President George H. W. Bush had been known for saying ‘read my lips.’ I began urging colleagues and reporters to ‘read my pins.” -Madeleine Albright

Wanting the Unwanted

Everyone loves a feel-good, underdog story. There is just something about cheering for the little guy that makes life fun. There is no better feel-good story right now than Jeremy Lin.

Jeremy Lin High School 2006 All-Star Team

Lin attended Palo Alto High School (2002-2006) where he captained the basketball team his senior year and led his team to a 32-1 record, upsetting nationally ranked Mater Dei for the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Division II state title. After receiving no athletic scholarship offers out of high school and being undrafted out of college, the 2010 Harvard University graduate reached a partially guaranteed contract deal later in the year with his hometown Golden State Warriors.  After his first year, he was waived by the Warriors and the Houston Rockets in the preseason before joining the New York Knicks early in the 2011-2012 season. The rest, as we know is Linsanity!

Athletes are not the only ones that get over-looked, vintage jewelry also gets waived from owner-to-owner (traded), or every athletes worst nightmare discarded (melted).

Joint Venture Jewelry

I am saddened when I hear gold buyers coaxing customers strapped for cash into their stores to scrap out their gold jewelry. If your jewelry no longer fits your style, there is someone who may love your old jewels. Just like Jeremy Lin, several teams did not see much worth in him, but instead of melting him, he moved along until finding an owner who found value in him. After bouncing between a few teams, I am glad Lin finally found a home with the New York Knicks where he is thriving.  Consignment is a great way to give your  jewelry bouncing between owners a new home, and that new home could be Joint Venture Jewelry.

When She Said Yes: Katherine and Kevin

On February 23, 2012, in When She Said Yes, by Joint Venture Jewlery

Kevin proposed to me on May 5, 2011 at Haywood Hall, the site of our planned wedding nuptials. He led me down the garden path to a lit gazebo where he had previously placed 4 large vases of a dozen roses and each vase was a different grouping of rose variety. On each vase was a numbered card.

The first card on a bench to my left read, “When I went to bed last night, my last thought was of you.” The second card on a bench to my right read, “When I woke up this morning, my first thought was of you.” The third card inside the gazebo read, “You are my everything; my sun, my stars, my sky.” The fourth card on the steps of the gazebo read, “You are my everything…and this is the reason why.”

I knew at that moment he was going to propose to me and I had tears in my eyes. Kevin dropped down to one knee on the step to the gazebo and recited the remainder of the poem in which he had amazingly memorized and asked for my hand in marriage. It was absolutely the most memorable, romantic proposal a girl could ever receive. We then celebrated with a dinner at Hayes Barton Cafe (the restaurant of our first date) and he had on our table a dozen red roses. It was the first red rose I had received from him. Kevin makes me incredibly happy and feel so blessed to have such a wonderful man in my life!

You Are My Everything
By Powell

When I went to bed last night, my last thought was of you.
When I woke up this morning, my first thought was of you.
You are my everything; my sun, my stars, my sky.
You are my everything… and this is the reason why:

For when we met it was fate, fate from the soul within.
For when we met it was choice, choice to be your friend.
For when we first laughed together, I knew it was meant to be.
For when I fell in love, I knew you had fallen in love with me.

You are my everything, my breath belongs to you.
You are my everything, hold these words to be true.
You are my everything and
I’ll always love you…
and what’s more
I know you’ll always love me too.

Will You Be Mine?

Flowers die, chocolates make you fat, but jewelry lasts forever!

That’s my motto when it comes to the big love holiday, which is right around the corner! (hint, hint) Nothing says, ‘I care about you’ quite like a timeless piece of jewelry. Yet, it seems the men in our lives never really get that message. Dinner reservations, flowers, chocolates, and lingerie are among the top Valentine’s Day gifts. But nearly one-third of women, 29%,  would choose jewelry if they could receive only one gift for Valentine’s Day, according to a new survey by Sentient Decision Science for Sears.

Think jewelry is too expensive? Well think again, on average last year about $25 was spent on candy,  $73 on flowers,  $70 on lingerie, and between $220 to just over $500 on jewelry. Yet, at Joint Venture we have lots of great, affordable options starting at only $40.

Curious about the most popular jewelry item to give for Valentine’s? Engagement rings! Four million consumers expect to propose, or be proposed to, during Valentine’s Day.  Don’t worry not all jewelry has that kind of commitment attached to it.

Here are a few of our favorite jewels for all the women in your life, perfect for Valentine’s Day:

FOR YOUR WIFE

She already knows you love her, but why not give her another reminder? We suggest a colored-stone ring. For example, with this citrine ring she’ll gaze at it all day long and think of you. On average, women stare at the rings on their fingers about a million times a day, so why not have her think of you with each glance?

FOR YOUR SIGNIFICANT OTHER

Not ready to pop the big question but this is the woman of your dreams? Diamonds are always a girls best friend. You really can’t go wrong with a diamond necklace, like the vintage one pictured below. Diamonds say forever, and a necklace will buy you a little time before the ring.

A bracelet is a great option for this type of relationship.  This diamond heart bracelet is sweet and unique. She’ll be wowed by the thought you put into it. Remember, a thoughtful gift can go a long way.
