Diamonds and Diamond Cuts

Whether you are looking for a classic round cut diamond, or a contemporary princess cut diamond ring, there are many things to keep in mind when choosing your diamond. Most people are aware of the 4 C's: Carat, Cut, Clarity and Color. All of these things are important to keep in mind, but a significant aspect guiding the decision is how the diamond appeals to you personally and the emotion it stirs.

Modern cut stones give off highly desired brilliance and fire, while older cuts of diamonds offer character with history and charm.

We have a wide selection of transition, old European, rose and mine cut diamonds.

Older Diamond Cuts

Transition Cut
Transition Cut diamonds are in between the Old Euro cut and the modern brilliant stones of today. These diamonds have a larger crown and a smaller culet compared to older stones. The Transition cut is also known as the Early American Cut and was an attempt to be more precise in the cutting of diamonds.

Old Euro Cut
Old Euro Cut diamonds have side facets that are more slanted with smaller table top, and their culet is a flat spot creating the illusion of a hole in the center. This type of diamond was prevalent in the early 1900's through the 1940's.

Rose Cut
Rose Cut diamonds were popular until the early 1900's and are named for their shape, resembling the petals of a rose bud.

Old Mine Cut
Old Mine Cut diamonds were produced in the late 1800's. They are typically not round or square, but hold unique shapes resembling a cushion-like cut.

Modern Diamond Cuts

Round Brilliant
Round Cut Diamond By far the most popular, the round brilliant cut is the most optically brilliant because of its 360 degree symmetrical shape. In 1919, Marcel Tolkowsky defined specific angles and proportions to yield the most brilliant diamond, which form the basis for the modern “Ideal” designation. Round-brilliant diamonds are the only shape to have this ideal proportion defined. The least amount of metal around the stone is recommended. The goal is to hold it securely but not cover up too much of the diamond and block light from entering the stone.

Princess
Princess Cut Diamond The princess cut is a modern classic of clean, square lines and beautiful sparkle. The princess cut was developed in the 1970's and is now second only to the round brilliant in popularity. The cutting of this diamond combines the step-cutting of the emerald cut with the triangular facets of the brilliant cut and is cut with right-angle corners. The princess cut works beautifully as a solitaire but also looks great paired with side stones, especially trillions or smaller princess-cut diamonds.

Emerald
Emerald Cut Diamond The Emerald-cut is among the most classic of diamond shapes. Its clean lines come from step-cutting, or parallel line facets. Length-to-width ratios should be considered when choosing an emerald cut: Usually a 1.50:1.00 ratio is preferred, meaning that the length of the stone should be about 1 ½ times the width of the diamond. Natural inclusions are easier to see in this cut, therefore it is recommended to choose a “clean” stone.

Cushion
Cushion Cut Diamond The cushion cut is a relatively rare (and more expensive) shape and is for someone who wants something few people possess. The modern cushion shape is based on an antique cushion cut, which is a combination of round and square outline with a softened square or “pillow” shape. As a solitaire, it makes a statement and also looks wonderful paired with side stones such as baguettes.

Radiant
Radiant Cut Diamond The radiant cut is a beautiful combination of the classic emerald cut and the sparkle of the round brilliant. The radiant cut is similar to the princess cut but is usually a more rectangular outline and has blocked corners like those of an emerald cut. The radiant-cut stone looks great paired with side stones such as baguettes, trillions, or princess shapes.
