2020 represented a milestone for Amy Grunden, a William Neal Reynolds Distinguished Professor of Microbiology, who was officially named Assistant Director for the Life Sciences of North Carolina Agricultural Research Service (NCARS) in July 2020. Since Amy started at NC State in July 2000, she has led numerous microbial biotechnology-focused research projects; mentored early-career faculty; taught hundreds of undergraduate and graduate students in general microbiology and microbial metabolic regulation, respectively; and advised dozens of graduate and undergraduate students.
Her husband, Eric, also a scientist decided to mark her special 50th birthday while recognizing a professional achievement as well. Her daughter hand-sketched a draft showing a DNA helix with accent birthstones commemorating her education and family. We were then able to take the sketch and produce the CAD rendering.

The challenge in the design was to create a realistic view of DNA. We wanted to be sure it was 3 dimensional and represented the unique elements often found in such a microscopic form. The study of genetics has never been more important than today's unprecedented times. Four stones were placed in the design to represent Amy's educational institutions (NC State and the University of Florida) and birthstones of the family.

The finished DNA pendant!
Eric reports, “She loves it and so does everyone who sees it. We’re having so many great conversations about it!”
At Joint Venture Jewelry, we are delighted to have played a part in creating a lasting memorial of Amy’s life work!
